OMG WE’RE FAMOUS

Look! Space Oddities hit the big time!

Dixieland Dames 1

Read all about it on Weekend Notes……

It felt like being on the set of a quirky B grade movie set, but part of the action with the cast of the ‘Big Bang Theory’ and ‘Forbidden Planet’.

Kevin gets us!

What a weird and wonderful event this is growing into. We are enormously pleased by the high calibre, but also the daring, the creativity, the new material, the risky business… and the lively audience. Big love to you all.

Strap yourself in for an intergalactic adventure: Space Oddities launches in one week…

We are one-week out from our next event , Space Oddities. Our acts are locked in and looking shiny and sequined. The band is ready, the costumes are being prepared and we have more than a few tricks up our sleeve. You can expect a full-on immersive soundscape with visual depths the likes of which you have not seen before (nor likely will again!) Our all local line-up represents the creme de la creme of the fringe arts scene….

Here are some taste-testers…

THE RETROFUTURISTS

Retrofuturists 1

Since hatching half-formed from a nest of aluminum foil and CGI lasers in 3035, The Retrofuturists have been dissatisfied with the time they have found themselves in. Baffled by the decisions of the past, they decided to harness their uncontrollable sexuality to travel through dimensions and teach the past a sexy lesson or two.

The only problem is they can’t find their way back….

Equal parts terrifying and arousing, Brisbane-based artists Regan Lynch, James Halloran and Reuben Witsenhuysen are returning to Velvet Helmet after their electrifying debut at the Anti-Valentine’s Party. They are positively lubricated with inter-spatial goo, and are ready to warp into your wormholes – and your hearts – with all-new content from their out-of-this-world comedy cabaret.

CALLIOPE KINQUE

A long, long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away, God said “Let there be lips!”. And there were. And they were good lips. And they sang… of Science Fiction films from Hollywood’s Golden Age. Eleven Science Fiction B-Films are referenced in this song. How many do you recognise?

Miss Calliope Kinque is a burlesque personality, whose key is versatility! A darling of the stage, her quirky performances have featured in events from classy cabarets and interactive films to roller derby and the wrestling! Not afraid to push the limits, she’ll have your hips swinging and your heart singing.

VIOLA CLONING PROJECT

The Viola Cloning Project is a one-man, one-viola, seventy-five-effect-pedal improvising act, in which an ostentatiously gigantic quantity of flashing and beeping electronics converts a single instrument into a full string and percussion orchestra. It is the brainchild of Brisbane mega-multi-instrumentalist and mad scientist Richard Grantham.

Will we ever travel to Mars? How strong would our airship’s electric motors need to be? These and many other questions will be answered in a showing of a snippet of Hanns Walter Kornblum’s 1925 silent documentary “A Trip To The Planets”, with live soundtrack provided by The Viola Cloning Project.

BLACK FOX THEATRE

Black Fox 2

Ninjas, rockstars, robots and rocket scientists in service of a vengeful dog…

Black Fox Theatre brought you Bard Wars, The Empire Striketh Back and The Jedi Returneth, apparently bent on doing to Brisbane’s theatre scene what the Sex Pistols did to the music industry. But who is the Black Fox?

Black Fox Theatre treat this month’s Helmet to an exclusive look at their upcoming sci-fi cabaret, Killer Robot Heart. It’s a fearful tribute to the creatures we’ve created, the creatures we’ve discovered, and the creatures who’ve discovered us. Which of these they’re keeping at the Globe is really anybody’s guess.
